Ms. Luxenberg was awarded the DC Bar Pro Bono Service Award (1986) and the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence Special Award (1987). In addition, while active with the Women’s Legal Defense Fund, Ms. Luxenberg served as the Chair on the Task Force on Abused Women (1975-78) as well as a Consultant on its Emergency Domestic Relations Project; this was one of the very first efforts to fight domestic violence in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

Deborah Luxenberg, a principal in the Washington area law firm of Luxenberg, Johnson, & Dickens, PC, is a family law practitioner with more than thirty-three years experience. She began her private practice in 1975. She was joined by partners Stephen D. Johnson in 1992 and Dorrance D. Dickens in 1995.
Ms. Luxenberg and Luxenberg, Johnson, & Dickens, PC have been awarded a “preeminent” by Martindale Hubbell – the most prestigious U.S. attorney rating service. Since 1995, the survey of area lawyers by Washingtonian Magazine has named her as one of the areas top divorce lawyers. She is listed in The Best Lawyers in America (2007 & 2008) and Super Lawyers (DC, MD & VA) (2007 & 2008)
Ms. Luxenberg serves on the Executive Committee of the Council for Court Excellence and is the chair of its Committee on Children and the Courts. In 2008, she served on the Bar Association of DC panel that interviewed candidates for Chief Judge of the DC Superior Court. Her past positions include being President, Vice President and Secretary of the local chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Chair of the Domestic Relations Committee of the Bar Association of DC, and Chair of the Family Section of the DC Bar.
In addition to her professional teaching experience at law schools such as American University, Catholic University, and the George Washington University, Deborah Luxenberg has taught family law classes to attorneys through the DC Bar and the Bar Association of DC for over 25 years.
Ms. Luxenberg has made numerous television, radio, and lecture appearances as an expert on family law issues. Some of her appearances include The Today Show, CNN (re: the Elian Gonzales case), Burden of Proof, National Public Radio, Evening Exchange, To The Contrary, Good Morning Washington, and Newstalk. She has also been called on to testify on Capitol Hill concerning family law issues.
Deborah Luxenberg lives in Takoma Park, Maryland, with her husband and law partner, Steve Johnson. She is a member and supporter of the Takoma Foundation, the Ocracoke Island N.C. Preservation Society, the National Building Museum, Hadassah, the Smithsonian Resident Associate Program, and the Takoma Park Horticulture Society.
